Resources for Parents/Supports

Does your child or loved one suffer from OCD? Having a child or loved one struggling with OCD can be difficult in seeing them suffer. Knowing how to help them can be confusing. The way I try to help the person I care about with their OCD might end up feeding into their compulsive behaviors and keep them stuck in their OCD cycle. Often my child or partner might come to me seeking reassurance, multiple times a day and throughout the week. But if I don’t give them that reassurance, they are left with such distress. It is no wonder why we might accommodate these behaviors. Why would I want my loved one to suffer? Accommodations allow the OCD symptoms to be maintained while allowing my loved to one resist facing the feared situation and distress. But these accommodations will feed the OCD and make it stronger. Being able to be the best support you can to your loved one is a skill to learn. I specialize in helping parents and supports gain the psycho education and learn the tools to be the best support they can be.
I am available for phone and zoom calls to set up with either parents/family members/loved ones to learn the basics of psycho education of OCD and learn particular skills so they can reduce accommodating behaviors and help those supports navigate treatment effectively. In our education session we will address the nature of your loved ones OCD, identifying themes/obsessions/compulsions/triggers. We will develop a plan related to accommodations and how to reduce accommodations. Language will be developed in how to respond to distress your loved one faces and how not to feed back into their OCD. I will provide you literature related to OCD and worksheets to continue to use outside of the session. I offer 60 minute education sessions via zoom/phone call. Please feel free to reach out to discuss and set up an education session.
