Is This Depression? Signs and Symptoms.

Depression can be experienced by any individual at any point in their life. Depression might manifest in someone in unique ways; presenting different symptoms and signs. Depression can remain undiagnosed and untreated if we are not aware of how it looks. To be mindful of how we are thinking, feeling and behaving can give us indicators if our mental health is being negatively impacted. Depression can last for a few weeks or a few months and longer. It can be chronic or episodic in nature. Below are some common symptoms of depression one might experience.

  1. Difficulty concentrating-Depression can involve an inability to concentrate that impairs work or school performance. You might make more mistakes or have difficulty making decisions.

  2. Difficulty sleeping- One of the primary symptoms of depression is sleep disturbance. One may sleep too much, or too little. Insomnia may be present as well as irregular sleep patterns.

  3. Changes in appetite- One may experience urges to over eat and binge on food. While others may experience no interest in food or eating. Significant change in appetite can be a sign of depression.

  4. Irritability, agitation, and moodiness- Depression may express itself as irritability or agitation. One may see mood swings or quick mood changes. Depression may look like anger towards inward.

  5. Loss of interest in hobbies or usual activities- One may avoid doing the things they enjoyed doing. Loss of interest in hobbies. Avoidance of hobbies. Diminished pleasure in things that previously brought pleasure.

  6. Fatigue/Loss of Energy: Feeling lethargic, low energy. Low energy might be present despite having slept for many hours.

  7. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt- These feelings might be more common or excessive during depressive episodes.

  8. Changes in weight- Similar to changes in appetite, during a depressive episode a person might experience fluctuations with their weight. Weight gain or weight loss.
